Jennifer DeWease, 21, is a junior human resource management major at Shippensburg University (SU). In the fall of 2012, Jenn began her educational journey at SU as an undeclared freshman. The first two years of college journey was a time of self-discovery and personal growth for Jenn. At the beginning of her junior year, she decided that she wanted to pursue a degree in business, based on advice from her family and peers.
Today, Jenn maintains a very busy schedule. She spends a lot of time engrossed in campus activities. Jenn plays clarinet for the SU Marching Band (SUMB). Jenn’s involvement with the SUMB has opened many doors for her. Over winter break, she had the opportunity to travel to Ireland with the SUMB. Jenn is also a member of the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM). The SHRM has given her opportunity to network with other students in the field. Jenn has learned a lot about herself through her involvement in campus activities.
She truly believes that the key to success at Ship is to “get involved with some type of campus organization, because you will create so many memories and meet great new people with similar interests.”
Jenn’s days don’t end simply with campus activities. She also manages to maintain her part-time job at the local Weis Markets, a job she’s had since high school. Jenn is an avid member at her church. She teaches Sunday school classes and has participated in mission trips to Haiti. It hasn’t always been easy for Jenn to balance work, school and her other responsibilities, but she has gained a lot of insight from her daily juggling act. She believes that her biggest accomplishment in college career, thus far, is mastering time management.
Jenn explained, “It’s not easy to balance five classes, a part time job, my responsibilities in band, time with my loved ones and my involvement in extra-curricular activities, but I am proud of myself for doing it.”
Jenn has big plans for the future. Upon graduation, she wants to move south and pursue a career in the human resource department in a public school district. In time, she wants to go back to college to pursue a teaching license. Someday, Jenn hopes to be a kindergarten teacher.
