The Shippensburg University women’s basketball team defeated the Mansfield Mounties this past Wednesday 64-49, thanks in large part to a balance attack by the starters who were all able to score in double figures Wednesday night.
The victory ensured that the Raiders will finish the season at or above .500 in the conference since the PSAC began counting the league games in 2011.
The Red Raiders (15-9 and 11-7 PSAC East) were lead in scoring by Senior guard Logan Snyder and Senior forward Morgan Griffith who each had a team high 14 points. Griffith also had a game-high 15 rebounds to go along with her 14 points while Snyder chipped in with a team high 6 assists.
The Red Raiders also had a major contribution from Junior forward Stephanie Knauer who also had a double double of her own with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Senior guard Lauren Gold had 12 points to go along with five assists while Senior guard Colleen Young contributed 13 points as well.
The first half was very tightly contested with the Red Raiders leading for almost the entire half with the Mounties (3-21, 2-18 PSAC East) not too far behind. It wasn’t until 5:45 mark where the Red Raiders were able to extend their lead into double digits. After establishing a big lead the Red Raiders kept the pressure on the Mounties going up by as many as 17 points late in the first half.
The Red Raiders were able to keep the pressure on the Mounties going into the second half thanks in large part to their improved shooting. The team shot 50 percent from the field including 66.7 percent from the three-point line. This allowed the team to go up by as much as 20 points close to midway through the fourth quarter.
While the Red Raiders were able to dominate Mounties offensively their defense in this game cannot be ignored. The Raiders were able to hold the Mounties to 32.8 percent shooting from the field as well as 13.3 percent from the three-point line.
The Raiders will hope to duplicate their dominate performance when the team heads on the road to play Millersville Wednesday February, 18th at 5:30 pm.
