Among the countless controversies and generally boring 87th Academy Awards Show, one controversy stands out. Many people have complained about Joan Rivers not appearing in the ‘In Memoriam’ section of the Oscars.
Organizers of the slide show emailed reporters saying, “Joan Rivers is among the many worthy artists and filmmakers we were, unfortunately, unable to feature in the ‘In Memoriam’ segment of this year’s Oscar show.”
Something to consider is that many people in the industry pass away in a year and it is hard to feature everyone.
This year’s segment showed 50 people in the span of three and a half minutes. More than half of that number passed away over the past year.
Some people argue that Rivers was more of a comedian than a movie or TV personality. Others think she is an icon that earned her spot, especially after creating the show “The Red Carpet” on the home channel of the Oscars, ABC.
Giuliana Rancic gave the middle finger to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences during an episode of “Fashion Police” to express her distaste of Rivers being left out.
Melissa Rivers, Joan’s daughter, spoke out saying, "It would have been nice, especially considering the impact she had on the awards season, but Cooper and I have been overwhelmed with support and love over my mom's passing, and we choose to focus on that."
This statement did seem to help quell the Internet’s anger, slightly.
If anything, this was an eye opener to what it is like to choose who goes into the “In Memoriam” at the Oscars and how difficult it is to please everyone.
