The Shippensburg Orchestra will bring the spirit of Spain to southern Pennsylvania at the end of the semester. The orchestra will be performing at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 26, in the Luhrs Center. In the orchestra will be 17 students, 15 community players, 25 hired and one faculty member.
Dr. Mark Hartman will conduct the show, this semester, as the orchestra plays a number of pieces, featuring the theme of tango.
Bandoneon player, Hector Del Curto, from New York City, is being welcomed as a guest performer. He has played and recorded with world-renowned tango legend Astor Piazzolla.
Del Curto began studying tango music at a young age, winning the “The Best Bandoeon Under 25” when he was only 17. He has performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and Carnegie Hall in New York City.
Del Curto weaves between the worlds of tango, jazz and classical musical styles. His main instrument, a bandoneon, is similar to an accordion, but there are a series of buttons on both ends. For the orchestra concert, he will perform Piazzolla's classic tango concerto for bandoneon and orchestra. Included in the show will be several Latin pieces, including the Spanish-style Suite No. 2 from the opera “Carmen,” by Bizet, and “Libertango,” by Piazzolla.
Admission is free, and it will be a great opportunity to witness the skill of these players and experience the world of tango.
