Students threw whipped cream pies all around the CUB Amphitheater Thursday, Oct. 8 all in support of a good cause.
Shippensburg University’s 2015 Homecoming Court has spent the past three weeks fundraising as a part of their campaigns for king and queen. Thursday, they participated as a whole in “Pie the Court.” Members of the SU campus and community could donate $1 to the candidate they wanted to pie in the face.
The candidates have created GoFundMe accounts, reached out to businesses and friends and family for support in their efforts to raise money for Reins of Rhythm Riding and Horsemanship.
Reins of Rhythm is an organization in Shippensburg that works with able-bodied and disadvantaged children in an inclusive environment with horses. All proceeds from homecoming will go directly to it.
While campaigns rely mostly on individual fundraising efforts, the court decided to work together in this event.
“It was fun to be able to do things with the court,” Hunter Wolfe, one of the candidates for homecoming king, said. “I don’t feel like we were competing, but working together for one common goal and that felt good.”
The homecoming court and the homecoming committee put the pie the court event together. Zhane McMillion, Community Involvement Chairperson, works directly with the outreach program and sets up all fundraisers. She explained that the purpose was not only to fundraise, but also to allow the student body to interact with the court.
“To see the campus get involved with this event even though they had nothing to gain from it shows that we have a great community here at Ship,” McMillion said.
The 2015 SU Homecoming King and Queen will be announced at half-time during the homecoming football game on Saturday, Oct. 17.
