Condom Bingo began at 9 p.m. and was $5 at the door on Friday, Nov. 20. In the Ceddia Union Building’s Multi-purpose room, students were ready to compete in multiple games of bingo for a realm of prizes while bringing attention to the topic of safe sex.
Shippensburg University welcomed sexologist Jill McDevitt to host Condom Bingo this year. McDevitt, the featured speaker for this event, balanced the sensitive topic of safe sex with a mixture of games and education.
“Sexuality is a part of our lives,” McDevitt said. is the key motive for doing events like this.
The activities included a group game where the participants were assigned different intimate acts and then were required to order them from least to most risky. A variation of slides and videos were also shown in between games to engage everyone in the educational side of the night.
These slides explained the meaning of a sexually transmitted infection and the videos demonstrated the evolution of sex education in the United States. In addition to this, the topic of how to properly put on a condom was covered in steps.
“[It was] fun and really informative. I learned how to put a condom on.” SU sophomore Brielle Dorfman said.
After each game of bingo, the winner was given a prize. The prizes included gifts cards, sweatshirts and T-shirts, gift baskets and much more up for grabs. However, no one walked away empty-handed Friday night. Each table was camouflaged in a variety of condoms and lubricants that were free to anyone in attendance.
Condom Bingo is SU’s biggest event and one of the only events that promotes safe sex. This was addressed when discussing the importance in this event with assistant dean of students & director of fraternity & sorority life, Emilee Danielson-Burke.
“This is the only sexual health event we do on campus,” she said. She added that this is not an anti-sex event, but a safe sex program.
