The Shippensburg University women’s indoor track & field team competed for the first time in six weeks on Saturday at Lewisburg, finishing third overall in Bucknell University’s Gulden Invitational held inside Gerhard Field House.
Shippensburg finished the day with 28 performances that satisfied the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying standards, as the Raiders put forth a bevy of quality efforts despite the long layoff.
Junior Sarah Hunt (Fairfield, Pennsylvania/Fairfield Area) had an incredibly well-rounded day for the Raiders. Despite finishing second in the long jump to upstart Bloomsburg junior Kaylee Caruso, Hunt’s mark of 18 feet, 11 ¾ inches is a new season PR that moves her to seventh on the NCAA Division II performance list. She also won the triple jump, defeating Caruso and several others, with a mark of 38 feet, 1 ½ inches.
Yet jumping was not the only thing in Hunt’s repertoire on Saturday. She ran in the preliminaries of the 60-meter dash for the first time in her collegiate career and posted the fastest qualifying time – 7.93 seconds – to tie sophomore teammate Lindsay Sheehan (Perkasie, Pennsylvania/Pennridge) for fourth on the PSAC performance list. Hunt did not run in the finals as she returned to the jumps runway for competition.
Freshman Allison King (Lansdale, Pennsylvania/North Penn) won the finals of the 60-meter dash, running 7.92 seconds to slot third on the conference performance list. King also placed fourth in the 200 meters, running 26.36 seconds.
Sophomore Danielle Sciremammano (DuBois, Pennsylvania/DuBois Area) mirrored Hunt’s effort on the day in having successful performances both on the track and in the field. She now ranks third in the PSAC in both the 60-meter hurdles (9.03) and the long jump (17 feet, 11 inches) after placing third on the day in both events. Sciremammano improved her indoor collegiate personal best in the long jump nearly eight full inches and her PR in the hurdles by one-tenth of a second.
Senior Megan Lundy (York, Pennsylvania/Central York) finished second in the 400-meter dash behind a Bucknell runner, but her time of 58.55 seconds becomes the PSAC’s new lead effort in the event upon conversion (57.79 seconds). Lundy also ran the 500 meters in 1:25.37.
Junior Casey Norton (Granville Summit, Pennsylvania/Troy) excelled in her indoor debut, placing second in the 3K by running 10:13.44. The converted time (10:08.23) puts her atop the PSAC performance list by two seconds and sits as a three-second indoor personal best. Sophomore Caity Reese (Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania/Lower Dauphin) picked up a conference qualifier in the mile, running 5:22.53 – a seven-second personal best.
At the throws area, senior Sam Nelson (Berwyn, Pennsylvania/Conestoga) finished second in the weight throw with a season PR of 48 feet, 2 ¾ inches. Junior Tamara Ovejera (Frederick, Maryland/Gov. Thomas Johnson (Clemson)) took third place in the shot put (43 feet, 0 ¼ inches) and seventh in the weight throw (44 feet, 11 ¾ inches), while junior Samantha Johnson (Mount Airy, Maryland/Linganore (Hagerstown C.C.)) hit a new season best in the weight throw (43 feet, 0 ½ inches).
Other conference qualifiers in field events included freshman Abby Wagner (Altoona, Pennsylvania/Altoona Area) in both the long jump (17 feet, 3 ¼ inches) and the triple jump (36 feet, 4 ¾ inches), with the latter effort slotting her fifth on the conference’s performance list. Freshman Abby Martin (Carlisle, Pennsylvania/Boiling Springs) improved her season PR in the long jump to 16 feet, 9 ¾ inches. Freshman Olivia Lee (Carlisle, Pennsylvania/Boiling Springs) had another solid triple jump, posting a mark of 36 feet.
Also in jumps, sophomore Kali Hepner (Hamburg, Pennsylvania/Hamburg) tied for first in the pole vault by clearing 10 feet, 11 ¾ inches, while junior Emily Wicker (Harrisburg, Pennsylvania/Bishop McDevitt) tied her personal best by clearing 10 feet, 6 inches. In the high jump, freshman Madelyne Pasteka (Montrose, Pennsylvania/Montrose Area) earned a conference qualifier by getting over the bar at 5 feet, 0 ½ inches.
Shippensburg splits its squad next weekend, with the majority of the team returning to Bucknell for the Bison Open & Multi while the other faction will head to Penn State for the National Invitational.
