Cam Newton was named the NFL’s Most Valuable Player on Feb. 6th, one day before playing the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 50.
Ever since the Carolina Panthers drafted Cam Newton back in 2011, there have been a large number of both critics and fans who have questioned whether or not Newton could be the face of a franchise and lead a team to a championship.
Newton dazzled fans everywhere as he and the Panthers decimated the NFL this season. Newton’s amazing play on the field and his incredible dance moves in the end zone had fans all over the country glued to their TV’s.
Newton played so well, in fact, that some fans were offended by his dancing in the end zone after scoring touchdowns. One Tennessee Titans fan sent a written letter to the Panthers to tell the team how Newton’s dancing offended both her and her young daughter.
One Seattle Seahawks fan went to the extreme and tried to get Newton banned from CenturyLink Field, where the Seahawks play.
Newton was finally able to silence his critics this season after being named the league MVP. Newton played so well this season that many now believe that Newton could become the new face of the NFL.
Newton threw for 3,837 yards with a career high 35 touchdowns and only 10 interceptions during the regular season. Newton was able to put up these numbers despite his best receiver, Kelvin Benjamin, being out for the season with a torn ACL.
Newton also rushed for 636 yards and 10 touchdowns, making Newton one of seven players in NFL history with at least 45 total touchdowns in a season.
Newton was able to lead the Panthers to a 15-1 record in the regular season, giving the Panthers the best record in the NFL.
Newton then led his team to Super Bowl 50 to play Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos after defeating the Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals in the playoffs this season.
Unfortunately for Newton and Panthers fans everywhere, Newton was unable to replicate his amazing regular season when matched up against the NFL’s best defense in Super Bowl 50.
Newton completed 18 of 41 catches for 265 yards with one interception against the Broncos on Feb. 7th. Newton was pressured the entire game and was unable to get into a good rhythm throwing or running the ball on Sunday.
Newton and the Panthers have arrived and are ready to take the NFL by storm. Both the Panthers and Newton should be even better next season. With the return of Benjamin and other key players, this team should be able to do what it failed to do this Sunday — raise the Lombardi trophy as Super Bowl champions this time next year in Super Bowl 51.
