According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), approximately 29.1 million people have diabetes. However, approximately 27.8% of people with diabetes are undiagnosed.
On Sunday, April 24 more than 60 people gathered at 10 a.m. at Shippensburg University for the 5th annual Dash for Diabetes. Sponsored by Kappa Delta Phi National Affiliated Sorority, the event started after active sister, Emily Norman, passed away from diabetes.
The 5K started with a speech by Dash for Diabetes chair, Kaiti Fox. After the speech, 30 balloons were released to honor Emily Norman.
"It was a lot of work, but I am hopeful that we will raise more money than we ever have!” Fox said.
People of all ages attended the event, including Emily Norman's parents who had no idea that Kappa Delta Phi NAS held an event for their daughter.
"It blows us away how everyone comes together for this event,” Emily’s mother, Peggi Norman said, “We are so appreciative of everything that is being done in honor of our daughter."
A silent auction took place before and after the dash. A variety of items were available to bid on, including a Starbucks basket, an Antonio Brown autographed picture, a Radko Gudas puck, an SU blanket, Jamberry baskets and more!
On a perfect 75 degree weather day, each runner/walker went through the outskirts of campus in order to finish. Active sister of Kappa Delta Phi National Affiliated Sorority, Kayla Bowman, said the event hit close to home for her.
“This event is very near and dear to my heart because my sister, too, struggles everyday with diabetes,” Bowman said, “I’m glad that I can be a part of such an amazing event.”
In total, the event raised $865.75. Each dollar made will be donated to the ADA to help others who struggle with the disease.
