The Shippensburg University women’s volleyball team hosted four visiting teams this past weekend for the Raider Classic II.
On Friday, Sept. 9 SU took on Philadelphia University at 3 p.m. for its first match of the weekend. The Raiders emerged victorious, dominating the Rams in three sets with final set scores of 25-19, 25-16 and 26-24.
Freshmen Samantha Webber and Kendall Johnson led the scoreboard with nine kills each, while sophomore Morgan DeFloria followed with five kills. Webber also led in blocks with a total of seven; senior Maura Nolan had three blocks and DeFloria had two. Nolan led the offense with 24 assists, while sophomore Angela Tarabrella had three assists and senior Annie Goerl had one. Senior Maria Peluso served the team’s only aces with two and also led SU’s defense with 16 digs. Goerl and freshman Megan Forstburg contributed on defense, as well, with Goerl digging 13 hits and Forstburg digging 12.
SU took the court again for the final match of the day at 8 p.m. against the University of Virginia’s College at Wise. The Raiders ended the night with a win, defeating the Cavaliers in three sets with final set scores of 25-23, 25-19 and 25-12.
Webber once again led the offense with 12 kills. DeFloria’s 10 kills and Goerl’s seven contributed to the offense, as well. Goerl, DeFloria and Peluso all served aces for SU. Goerl served two, while DeFloria and Peluso each served one. Johnson assisted the defense with four blocks, while DeFloria and Webber each had two. Nolan racked up a total of 34 assists; Forstburg contributed two assists. Peluso tallied 12 digs with Forstburg following behind with 11 and Goerl with eight.
SU began its second day of play on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 2 p.m. against Virginia State University. The Raiders won yet another three-set match against the Trojans with final set scores of 25-22, 25-12 and 25-15.
Webber led the scoreboard with 12 kills, while DeFloria racked up seven and Peluso six. There were many aces across the board for SU with Peluso serving four, Nolan serving three and Forstburg serving one. Johnson led in blocks with three, and DeFloria and Webber each had one. Nolan had 34 assists, while DeFloria had two and Goerl had one. Goerl led the defense in digs with 19. Other top defense contributors included Peluso with 13 digs and DeFloria with nine.
SU capped off an undefeated weekend with a win over Shepherd University at 6:30 p.m. The Raiders took the Rams to four sets with final set scores of 25-20, 25-14, 20-25 and 25-19.
Webber racked up 16 kills followed by DeFloria with 11 and Johnson with nine. Peluso and Forstburg led in aces with three each; Goerl served two aces. Webber assisted the defense with a total of four blocks while DeFloria and Nolan each had two blocks. Nolan led the offense with 49 assists; Peluso had two assists and Forstburg had one. DeFloria had a great defensive game with a total of 22 digs. Goerl contributed 13 digs followed by Peluso who dug 12 attacks.
The Raiders will travel to Ohio next week to play against the University of Charleston, Alderson Broaddus University, Davis & Elkins College and Ohio Valley University.
