The Thought Lot welcomes the Sweden born, Americana-Folk singer-songwriter Sofia Talvik as she makes a tour stop in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, Oct. 22. Following her concert at The Thought Lot, which is the final stop in her 2016 Great Lakes Tour, Talvik will take to her RV, and travel back to her home country of Germany for a series of local performances to end the year.
Fortunate enough to discover her genuine passion for music early on, Talvik learned how to play the classical piano as a child, and as a teenager, attempted to branch out musically, learning how to play the acoustic guitar. Her interest in songwriting blossomed in her teenage years when she began to teach herself how to play the guitar. For Talvik, creating lyrics to go along with guitar chords, aided her in mastering the art of the stringed musical instrument quickly.
Since her debut album “Blue Moon” in 2005, Talvik has consistently provided her fans with fresh music about life and love as she went on to release five more albums, with her most recent being “Big Sky Country.” Her music is infectious and has managed to reach a diverse group of listeners across the globe in her clear-cut effort to craft relatable lyrics accompanied by a unique Nordic-American blend that is refreshing to hear.
“The best music is that which you can relate to,” Talvik said. “You know it is a good song when you can listen to it and think ‘this was written for me,’ and that is what I strive for in my music.”
Through the course of her career, music has gifted Talvik with more than just a chance to pursue her musically rooted dreams, but it has also given her the opportunity to travel the world. Talvik tours in Europe, but she admits that her fan base resides primarily in the United States, and so she willingly goes where her music demands.
Traveling to well over half of the 50 states, Talvik tours the U.S. about twice every year in her RV, and loves every minute of it.
“It’s not as tiring as you think,” Talvik said. “I have my home with me every day, and it is a lot of fun to see a lot of new places and meet new people.”
While Talvik has had the privilege of performing at larger venues in the past, such as Lollapalooza in 2008, for her, nothing is quite like the smaller more intimate settings like The Thought Lot. These modest venues give Talvik the opportunity to personally connect with the audience and get to know them on a deeper level, while they do the same.
Doors open on Oct. 22 at 8 p.m., and Talvik will take the stage following opening acts Tresa Paul and other artists that have yet to be determined. Tickets for the concert will be sold at the door and can also be purchased ahead of time on The Thought Lot website. Tickets are $8 with an SU student ID and $10 for the general public.
