Former Shippensburg University running back and current fullback of the New Orleans Saints, John Kuhn, had a day to remember Sunday.
Kuhn, who signed with the Saints after spending nine years in Green Bay with the Packers, scored three touchdowns— including the game-winning touchdown— in a 35–34 win over the San Diego Chargers.
It was the second three-touchdown game of Kuhn’s career. Kuhn’s other three score game occurred on Dec. 26, 2010 against the New York Giants.
Kuhn scored his first touchdown of the game with 9:20 left in the second quarter on a 4-yard pass from Saints quarterback Drew Brees. He later added a 1-yard rushing touchdown in the third quarter, before scoring his final touchdown on a 1-yard rush with 1:57 left to play in the game.
On Sunday, Kuhn had five touches. Three of five went for touchdowns, and the other two were first downs. Kuhn tallied 12 total yards in the win. He currently leads the Saints in rushing touchdowns with three, even though he has only has 11 carries.
"I'd consider myself pretty low on the pecking order of targets to try and stop for the other team," Kuhn told ESPN’s Mike Triplett. "So that's why I feel like I can kind of sneak in there like an ace in the hole."
Kuhn also told Mike Triplett he is not playing angry this season after the Packers decided to part ways with the Packer fan-favorite.
"No, I don't feel like I'm angry. Honestly, I'm having a blast this year," Kuhn said. "And what a locker room. These guys really took me in and made me one of them. I couldn't be any more appreciative, and I'm happy to be here. I'm having a blast. This is a great team. And I only look forward to bigger things now."
After Sunday’s game, Kuhn now has 27 career touchdowns. 18 of those touchdowns came on the ground, while the other nine were receiving touchdowns. Kuhn has won two Super Bowls, and has been named to the Pro-Bowl four times in his NFL career.
At SU, Kuhn compiled 4,685 rushing yards, 53 touchdowns, 5,300 all-purpose yards and 26 games with at least 100 yards rushing. All of his achievements set Red Raider records. In 2003, Kuhn won the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division Offensive Player of the Year Award, and he was a three-time PSAC Western Division First Team selection.
