The sisters of Alpha Omicron Pi (AOII) brought kindness to campus the week of Nov. 13. Each day was dedicated to different people and organizations, such as Greek life, faculty, AOII advisors, student body, AOII chapter and the Shippensburg community.
Harley Bechtel, philanthropy chair and Sydney Dore, PR chair, planned activities from Nov. 13-17 for AOII’s yearly “Kindness Week.” The activities started on Sunday when AOII joined together to write their favorite candy and drink on a piece of paper, placing it in a hat. Each girl then picked from the hat and wrote a short note to the person they picked saying what makes them a great sister. Later in the week, the sisters exchanged the notes and gave them their favorite snacks.
“The exchange was one of my favorite parts about this week,” sister Jackie Smith said. “With all of our events and how busy we sometimes get it’s nice to take time to recognize how much our sisters mean to us.”
On Monday, the ladies of AOII made personalized bags with candy and snacks. Dore and Bechtel personally handed them out to each sorority and fraternity to show AOII’s appreciation of every organization in Greek life.
On Tuesday, a sister from different majors named a professor who has inspired her or helped them throughout the semester. Each sister in those majors worked together to write a thank you note for the professor and delivered it to them.
“A lot of Professors don’t hear enough how much they do for students and how much we appreciate them so I’m glad we all came together and did this,” sister Alex Anderson said.
That same day, the Leaders Council, which is members with positions, wrote letters to AOII advisors thanking them for their support and help throughout their time having their position.
“I don’t know what I would have done without my advisor.” Alex Anderson said. “She has done so much for me so writing this thank you note for her was really important to me.”
Every year, AOII does one event during kindness week and this year they chose to hand out free coffee and doughnuts on campus from Dunkin’ Donuts Wednesday from 12-3pm.
“It’s getting close to the end of the semester and students are probably running out of flex so we thought this would be really helpful to those who don’t have flex and to those who are in a hurry and cant wait in long lines,” Dore said.
For the last day of their kindness week, AOII held a “sisterhood” in the evening and all the sisters hung out and watched movies together. They also made tie-knot blankets to donate to Safe Harbour, a non-profit organization for the homeless. “Helping to plan kindness week took a lot of work and time but in the end it was really worth it,” Dore said. “This is my last year here in Shippensburg so I always love spending more time with all of my sisters.”
