Shippensburg University’s Social Work Department is hosting a hygiene product drive called Operation Shower for the Salvation Army of Greater Carlisle.
The drive is collecting products for the shelter and shower program, and will run until Oct. 29.
Approximately 442 people are homeless in Cumberland County, and the drive will ensure that people will be able to fulfill their most basic needs, according to a press release from Operation Shower publicist Katlyn Michaels.
“The ability to shower is something we often take for granted. Lack of proper hygiene is a serious public health issue. Through the drive, we can help improve the lives of so many,” Michaels said.
Operation Shower is in need of the following full-size products: shampoo, conditioner, soap, body wash, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant and feminine hygiene products. In travel size only, mouthwash, disposable razors and lotion are also needed.
Donation boxes are located inside Shippen Hall. Local churches, including Our Lady of the Visitation Catholic Church, are also conducting collections.
Those who are interested in donating but do not have access to a box should reach out to Operation Shower chairperson Marissa Swope at ms9357@ship.edu.
The department is also looking for businesses or individuals that would like to make an annual donation to sustain products at the shelter. Anyone interested in being a sponsor of the Salvation Army of Greater Carlisle’s Shower Program should contact Community Liaison Amanda Irwin at ai5361@ship.edu.
