The Shippensburg University Students Advocating for Equality (SAFE) group is working to bring the campus community together and promote diversity after their office door was defaced earlier this month.
“The event impacted us, as an organization and community, in a way that brought everyone together. But, it did show us that there is still homophobia, transphobia and other forms of discrimination that takes place on our campus,” SAFE president Kendal Clewell said.
Messages of hate targeted at the LGBT community were posted outside of the SAFE office door.
The group held a chalking event to celebrate diversity among faculty and students as a response to the incident.
The Pride Center also held a pride week for national coming out day last week.
Resources such as SAFE are important to make sure everyone on campus no matter their gender or sexual orientation feel comfortable, she said.
There is an ongoing investigation as to who is responsible for the incident.
SAFE did not comment on whether the investigation has led to who is responsible or if any actions are being taken against any suspects.
Clewell said the university and students have shown respect and support for SAFE.
Members of SAFE plan to continue hosting events in the future to make the campus more aware of the LGBT community.
