Former special counsel Robert Mueller testified before Congress on July 24, and laid out the facts involving his investigation into the act of war that was launched by the Russian government during the 2016 presidential election.
Here is what occurred, and this is the extent that has been declassified by those leading the government who were put in place by “individual number one,” aka President Donald Trump: The Internet Research Agency, a Russian military organization, created 470 fake Facebook accounts that launched rallies in Trump’s name in the U.S. They reached 126 million people with 3,500 advertisements purchased through these accounts. Additionally, the Internet Research Agency created 3,814 fake Twitter accounts. They hacked the Democratic National Committee and Sen. Hillary Clinton.
After the Internet Research Agency hacked the aforementioned entities, it passed the information to WikiLeaks, which communicated this information to the Trump campaign. Those emails, which were illegally obtained, were released at key points to create a diversion from the Access Hollywood tape. This was done in a fashion to favor the Republican nominee and now president.
Regardless of one’s political party, the above are facts that contain only the surface details of the wide-ranging attack on our democracy.
Some of the reports in the media and elsewhere have pointed to the issue that Mueller didn’t shy away from the report. These individuals were somehow hoping for a bombshell. These are the ones who were going to spin it into Trump’s favor in such a marvelous fashion that even Trump would not have been able to do so himself.
Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.), chairman of the house judiciary committee, asked Mueller during the hearing: “Did you actually totally exonerate the president?”
“No,” Mueller responded.
The only thing more chilling than the fact that President Trump is sitting in the oval office is what Mueller said about the ongoing attacks from the Russian government.
“They are doing it while we sit here. And they expect to do it in our next election,” Mueller said.
In a press conference in May, Mueller even suggested that action might need to be taken outside of the criminal justice system.
Rep. Veronica Escobar (D-T.X.) asked Mueller “Is that impeachment?” Mueller said “I’m not going to comment on that.”
Mueller is an American institutionalist, whereas Donald Trump is the opposite. He was elected by bucking the establishment and therefore has zero respect for institutions like the rule of law.
Reading between the lines of Mueller’s words, we see a man who wants to have no part in the downfall of an American president and therefore has too much respect for the executive branch to use the word impeachment. This is despite the fact he is pleading with members of the house to remove a man who was put there by foreign interference.
It’s time the American people take stock of where we are in the republic’s history. The Russians attacked our democracy and they will do it again. Never before in American history has there been such a clear and present danger coming from the Oval Office.
It is democracy’s last hour, but it can be if we so choose its finest hour. If we choose the latter, democracy will survive, and if not it will be a distant relic that we all yearn for yet again. Do not allow it to be the last hour. Choose for it to be the finest hour, for if we refuse to tend to democracy than we do not deserve democracy.
