Shippensburg University’s field hockey team picked up two wins this week by a combined score of 17-0, securing the No. 1 seed for the PSAC playoffs.
Last Tuesday, SU (14-0, 9-0 PSAC) got a lopsided 12-0 victory over Seton Hill on the road, scoring in all four quarters of the match.
Eleven different Raiders had at least one point in the win and senior Jazmin Petrantonio who totaled five goals and an assist in just 20 minutes of play, led them.
Freshman Mya Kemp scored twice and senior Jenna Sluymer added a goal and two assists.
Petrantonio scored just 45 seconds into the match off a penalty corner from graduate Caitlyn Wink and scored her second goal half a quarter later. Kemp scored her first goal with five seconds remaining in the first quarter off a rebound shot from freshman Paige Graber.
Another penalty quarter goal in the second gave Petrantonio a hat trick, and a tip-in goal from Wink and an unassisted goal by Sluymer made it 6-0 at halftime.
Freshman Merel Hoekstra scored her first collegiate goal ten minutes into the third period, and Petrantonio scored twice more before the end of the third.
Fellow freshman Nya Gilchrist and Valu Paul both scored in the third period and Kemp scored her second goal in the period as well. The fourth and final period saw freshman Tess Jedeloo score off an assist from senior Maddie Reuther.
Freshman Lindsay Tripodo and senior Meg Thompson combined for the shutout in goal.
On Sunday, the Raiders got past IUP 5-0 behind a hat trick from Paul and a goal each from Petrantonio and Sluymer.
Sluymer got on the board first with an individual score in the second and Paul followed that up with a tip-in to give SU a 2-0 lead at halftime.
Paul scored again in the third off a Sluymer assist and got her hat trick in the fourth off a rebound shot.
Petrantonio scored her goal in the opening minute of the fourth quarter, tying her single-season career high with her 29th goal of the season.
In goal, Tripodo was credited with a save in her fifth solo shutout of the season.
In the games combined, Shippensburg led shots on goal 44-1 and penalty corners 35-9.
This past week SU was ranked No. 1 in the first edition of the 2021 NCAA Atlantic Region rankings. The rankings are annually used to determine the teams that qualify for the NCAA Divison II Field Hockey Championships. Rankings will be released every Wednesday leading up to the tournament.
The Raiders will return to the field Tuesday, back at Robb Sports Complex to take on Frostburg State at 4 p.m.
