Campaigning for SGA officer elections begins

The Student Government Association (SGA) is planning a full return to in-person officer elections this semester. The election will determine the officers for the 2022-2023 school year.

Students interested in running for president, vice president of internal affairs, vice president of finance, vice president of external affairs or vice president of student groups can pick up a petition at the Ceddia Union Building (CUB) information desk.

Since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, SGA has held all elections online.

“In our virtual elections, students were able to bypass the petition signature requirements and instead be considered for the position straight to the elections process, which was run on Campus Groups, and ultimately decided if they would win the position based on their votes accumulated,” Seth Edwards, Chair of the SGA Elections Committee (ELC) said.

Normally, students must go around campus and collect student signatures on a physical petition sheet. This part of campaigning can be as simple as asking for signatures to putting up posters campus-wide. Pre-COVID, campaigning students often decorated pathways with chalk slogans and campaign ads outside of residence halls and the CUB.

Since SU has returned to a fully on-campus student experience, the ELC proposed a return to the original rules from 2019 and passed the proposal in an emergency vote, Edwards said.

Petitions are due to CUB 201 by Feb.11. Candidates will attend an Election Rules meeting and give speeches. The election will take place from Monday, Feb. 28 to Thursday, Mar. 3. Results will be announced on Mar. 4 and the transition of power ceremony for the 2022-2023 officers will be on Thursday, Apr. 28.

“Shippensburg University is back to in-person instruction, activities and engagement and it plans to stay that way. SGA is moving with that same determination to revive a recovering student-engaged community. Having the 2022 SGA Elections be in person as they were pre-Covid, is one way we're doing that,” Edwards said.
