On Saturday, Feb. 4, the SU women’s basketball team defeated East Stroudsburg University, and senior guard Ariel Jones hit another mark in her record-breaking career.
Jones surpassed the NCAA Division III free throw record previously held by Simone Edwards. Jones moved to second all-time in the NCAA and the national leader of free throws made. Jones now sits behind the former University of Washington and current Las Vegas Aces player Kelsey Plum. Outside of the free throw line, Jones had 35 points in the game for the fifth time in her career.
The Raiders came out of the gate hot with an 8-0 run. The Warriors quickly fought back and brought the Raider's lead down to seven points at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Raiders held on to their lead and had a 10-point lead going into the second half.
In the third quarter, the Raiders extended their lead to 16 points in the middle of the third quarter. The Warriors were able to cut the deficit to 10 points at the end of the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Raiders held onto their lead and defeated the Warriors 76-67. The Raiders held the lead for the entirety of the game.
Outside of Jones’ 35 points, Abbie Miller had a double-double in the game with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Lauren Pettis had 10 points and six rebounds. Erin Gibbons had nine points and six rebounds.
East Stroudsburg’s Shyla Sanford led the Warriors in points with 18 points. Ryan Weise had 13 points. Carley Adams had 12 points in the game.
This week, the Raiders will host West Chester University at Heiges Field House on Monday. The Raiders will then travel to Kutztown and Mansfield University on Wednesday and Saturday.
Tip off for Wednesday’s game against Kutztown is set for 5:30 p.m.
