College sports are a large part of the social aspect of college. College pride stems mostly from the success of a school’s sports teams, and even when they do not win, students will continue to attend the events and cheer on their peers. This brings up the question: Why do college sports bring us together?
Football season has long passed, but it usually begins with practice over the summer and the season running through the fall. College football is the sport that brings out the most students and community members. The community rallies behind its team, wear the school’s swag and cheer as cheerleaders flip and the football flies.
People come to support their team and stay for the community it builds. The hot dogs sizzling at the food stands and the parents coming to see their children on the football team, cheerleading, or playing in the band highlight the experience. The sense of community it builds fosters a spirited mentality and brings the community and campus together.
Football is not the only sport that draws people together. Sports run through the entire year. Athletes spend their time practicing and preparing for the next game. The hours of unseen effort and dedication from the students is something that those who have never participated in a sport cannot completely understand. Teammates become brothers and sisters, and the bonds they form last a lifetime.
This past season, the Shippensburg University women’s basketball team advanced to the NCAA tournament. The excitement from the community after the team accomplished this great feat was wonderful. People filled the bleachers to support the team and create a lively atmosphere.
Sports are more than winning and losing. College sports teams foster a community, create something to hope for and a time for students to get together with their peers.
It is time to recognize the impact sports have in the campus and the community. Pride in Shippensburg’s sports peaks not when we are unbeatable, but when we celebrate our teams together.
