Field Hockey goes 2-0 for the weekend
Shippensburg University´s field hockey team opened its season with two wins at home.
On Friday, the No. 2-ranked team beat the No.9 team Mount Union 4-1 after trailing 1-0 thanks to goals from freshman Hannah White, sophomore Agus Garibaldi, junior Tess Jedeloo and junior Nya Gilchrist.
On Saturday, the Raiders beat Belmont Abbey with strong offensive play, 6-0. Jedeloo scored the first hat trick of her collegiate career, Garibaldi scored another goal and added one assist and White earned two assists. Junior Yasmin De Meyer and sophomore Taryn Mayer scored the other two goals.
Next weekend, the Raiders will travel to face nationally-ranked Assumption and St Anselm on Saturday, Sept. 9, and Sunday, Sept. 10.
Men´s soccer comes back to win 3-2 over Chestnut Hill
Shippensburg University´s men´s soccer team hosted Chestnut Hill for their season opener on Saturday. The men fought back from a 2-0 deficit to take the win 3-2.
Juan Ortiz scored twice for Chestnut Hill in the first 37 minutes. Sophomore Hannes Ulbrich scored just 90 seconds later, so the Raiders were only trailing by one going into halftime.
In the second half, Darius Bamfo scored the equalizer in the 49th minute before Luke Kramer scored the game-winning goal in the 63rd minute. All three men who scored a goal scored their first career collegiate goals, and Andrew Versis made two assists in the game.
SU will host Jefferson on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 3 p.m.
Women´s soccer loses to Frostburg State 2-1
SU women´s soccer team traveled to Maryland on Friday to take on Frostburg State but lost the match 2-1.
The first half of the game was scoreless before Frostburg State scored twice early in the second half. The Raiders scored a late goal from a corner in the 84th minute but were unable to complete the comeback. Senior Maddie Stitcher scored the goal for SU, and goalkeeper senior Kendra Barlow made nine saves in the game, six of them were in the first half.
The Raiders will host nationally-ranked West Chester on Wednesday, Sept. 6 for their home opener.
