The Slater of the Summer is Allyson Ritchey, the multimedia director for The Slate. Ritchey was recognized for her articles and photography contributions over the summer months to The Slate’s website.
The articles included information about water conservation, affirmative action, studying abroad and on-campus events. She also coordinated a wildlife photo gallery.
Ritchey, a senior sociology and communication, journalism and media double major, joined The Slate in 2021 initially to help her friends within the organization, but quickly found her own enjoyment in the multimedia section.
As the multimedia director, it is Ritchey’s duty to get photos that accurately portray events. “I like being able to capture journalistic truths artistically,” Ritchey said.
Over the summer, Ritchey interned with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. She visited 15 different state parks and forests to get photos and videos for the department, created social media content and researched topics to cover.
“It was the perfect combination of my passions and education,” Ritchey said.
Ritchey’s goal after graduation is to become a photojournalist; however, she does not “dream of a capitalistic society.”
The Slate management would like to recognize Ritchey for her dedication to news coverage during the off-season. As Slater of the Summer, the entire staff congratulates her on her accomplishments and looks forward to her future contributions.
