As summer ended and a new semester began, Shippensburg University welcomed the Class of 2027. First-year students settled into their new dorms and embarked on their college experience this previous week during SU Fall Welcome Week. The transition from high school to college can be a lot for any student, but Fall Welcome Week helps soften the blow of this drastic change.
From Aug. 24 through Aug. 27, new students could attend various programs to help them learn about their campus environment and bond with their new Shipmates. With countless scheduled events, there was something for every freshman.
The week began with residence hall move-in, aided by a volunteer move-in crew of fellow Shippensburg students. The presence o RAs and RDs during move-in helped incoming freshmen get to know them and learn more about the building they will grow to call home in the coming year.
They were then given a warm welcome in the Luhrs Performing Arts Center with a performance by the SU Marching Band to kick off their Raider experience. This was followed by a performance by St. Louis-based comedy magician and hypnotist Josh McVicar. It was not a night to be missed.
Students got a night of rest before they began Academic Day. New students were also given free T-shirts to wear during New Student Convocation in the Luhrs Performing Arts Center. First-year students also met their University 101 instructors and learned tips and tricks to about how to succeed in their classes.
This year’s Fall Welcome Week ended with Big Red’s Block Party, an event where students can enjoy food, games and crafts. Students also visited representatives from clubs on campus, including student media groups like WSYC, SUTV, PRSSA and The Slate. The Slate is happy to welcome the class of 2027 to campus.
