Shippensburg University’s softball team dominated Saturday, capturing the first two home games of the young season as it defeated Goldey-Beacom in convincing fashion. Shippensburg utilized solid pitching and hitting to extend its win streak to four games following an 0-2 start.
Game 1 began with Shippensburg getting on the board in the first inning following an error by Goldey-Beacom, putting Shippensburg up 1-0. The scoring continued in the bottom of the third as designated player Aryanna Briddell put the Raiders up 2-0 thanks to a single to center field, scoring Morgan Lindsay.
Lindsay extended her home run streak to three games as she hit a two-run home run over the right-center field fence to put Shippensburg up 5-0. With her home run and a booming double, the catcher went 2-4 in the game.
A crucial part of the first game was the solid pitching by Shippensburg, allowing one run on five hits. Alicia Ball threw for six solid innings, allowing the Goldey-Beacom’s only run. Katelyn Minnie entered in the seventh to close off Game 1 and seal the victory for the Raiders with a5-1 final score. Goldey Beacom struggled in the field as it yielded two errors.
Shippensburg did not slow down in the second game, scoring double digits largely thanks to a breakthrough outing by freshman Brie Wilmont. Wilmont went 2-4 with six RBIs, which included a monster two-run home run in the first and a grand slam in the sixth. The Raiders collected 15 hits in the game to cap off a 10-4 victory.
The Raiders will take on Slippery Rock University next weekend to kick off the month of March. Starting Saturday, they will look to add to their four-game winning streak as they get set for another doubleheader. Shippensburg currently holds a 4-2 record on the season.
