Shippensburg University’s men’s and women’s swimming teams both ended their regular seasons Saturday at the 2024 Navy Invitational in Maryland.
For some athletes the meet was the last chance to qualify for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships that will begin on Feb. 14, while others used the meet as a last tune-up before the championships.
On the women’s team, sophomore Jenna Ober qualified for the championship. Ober satisfied the PSAC-standard in the 400-yard individual medley (IM) with her fifth-place time of 4:57.08.
Senior Alyssa Tomb, who already qualified for the championship, was the pacesetter for the Raiders in four events. She achieved PSAC-qualifying times in the 200-yard IM (2:13.73), the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.62) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:29.87), and she also paced SU in the 200-yard freestyle (2:03.56).
Senior Sammy Taylor was the fastest Raider in the 50-yard freestyle at 26.86 seconds and the 100-yard freestyle in 58.88 seconds.
Senior Marissa Bittner delivered the fastest times for SU in two events, with a third-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke (2:14.78) and time of 1:00.99 in the 100-yard backstroke.
On the men’s side, freshmen Mason Koeth and Robbie Ferlick led the team with senior Michael Salvatori, with all of them pacing the Raiders in three events each.
Koeth led the Raiders with an eighth-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke (53.22 seconds), a time of 47.55 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle and in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 52.91 seconds.
Ferlick was the pacesetter in the 200-yard IM (2:11.25), the 200-yard freestyle (1:48.21) and the 50-yard freestyle in 21.58 seconds.
Salvatori, who broke the 32-year-old Donald N. Miller Pool record in the 400 IM at the Senior Night meet over winter break, delivered SU’s fastest times in the 500-yard freestyle (5:06.94), 200-yard butterfly (2:04.27) and 200-yard breaststroke with a sixth-place time of 2:19.95.
The Raiders’ swimming teams will return to action for their PSAC Championships, which will be held from Wednesday, Feb. 14, through Saturday, Feb. 17, at the Keystone Aquatic Center in Carlisle.
