Shippensburg University’s indoor track-and-field teams continued to dominate at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) championships at Lehigh University.
The men’s team used a strong second day to win the team conference title for the thirteenth straight season. The women’s team placed second, falling to Slippery Rock by 30 points.
The men’s team finished Sunday, Feb. 18, in second place but still snagged a pair of event wins. Sophomore Garrett Quinan won the conference title in the 5000-meters, putting up a time of 15:04.61 to win by over 3 seconds. Junior Hayden Hunt placed third in the event, earning more points for the team.
On the field side, senior Josh Herbster dominated in the weight throw to win the PSAC event championship with 63 feet even, winning by 3 feet, 5.25 inches. Junior Mo Whittle was also strong in his event, placing second in the long jump at 23 feet, 5.5 inches.
The success continued for the group on Monday, Feb. 19, with 3 track event wins, and plenty of podiums to go around. The highlight was the Raiders sweeping the top three spots in the 3000 meters, with freshman Tommy Crum taking the conference championship for the event at 8:38.73. Hunt and junior Ian Sherlock completed the all-Shippensburg podium.
The other event wins for the men’s team saw junior Mason Boyd placing first in the heptathlon championship at 5176 points, besting junior teammate Robert Lissner in a Raiders 1-2. The last event win for the team saw senior Drew Dailey bring home a title in the 800 meters at 1:52.55.
Across the two days, the men’s team earned five event wins and 16 podiums, winning the team conference championship with 182 points, 64.5 points ahead of the runner-up, Slippery Rock.
The women’s team earned a trio of event championships across the two days, starting with junior Sara McKean winning the long jump Sunday, Feb. 18, at 18 feet, 18.5 inches. That result, along with podiums from junior Nicola Puggé in the pentathlon and the all-sophomore distance medley team of Melanie Barger, Kelsey Hull, Livi Rieck and Faith Wilson, had the Raiders sitting in fifth place entering the second day.
Monday, Feb.19, saw junior Sasha Lee take home the PSAC championship in the triple jump, victorious at 39 feet, 4 inches. Senior Leah Graybill took home a conference title as well, placing first in the 200-meters at 24.75 seconds. Graybill had a very successful weekend, also placing second in both 60-meters and as part of the 4X400 meters relay team.
With the conference season complete, many of the athletes on the track and field team will turn their attention to the outdoor season, which starts March 22. Multiple athletes will have qualified for the NCAA Division II indoor championships, which will take place March 8 and 9 at Pittsburg State.
