Shippensburg University’s women’s lacrosse team posted a win and loss this week against the IUP Crimson Hawks and the East Stroudsburg Warriors.
The Raiders move to a 2-8 record overall. Shippensburg won a hard-fought battle against the IUP Hawks in overtime, 16-15, in intense conditions on Wednesday.
During regulation, Shippensburg played with grit to keep IUP from the net. After IUP scored eight goals in the first quarter, the Raiders scored 11 and allowed seven in the following frames.
Junior Jamie Carvin got the Raiders within one at 5:06 in the fourth quarter, but the Raiders struggled to capitalize again.
Coach Brooke DellaValle called a timeout entering the last minute of play. After the timeout, sophomore Ali Pioli scored her second goal with 48 seconds left.
At the end of regulation, the score was tied 15-15. The Hawks won the draw in overtime but could not possess the ball. After a successful clear and an IUP penalty, the Raiders entered their offensive end. Junior Sara Vosburg scored her second career game-winning goal and the 80th goal of her career.
Vosburg, in an interview with Shippensburg Sports Information, expressed her gratitude for her team, saying the sideline “kept the energy up the whole time when the team was fighting back from the deficit and every single person on the field gave their all, so it was very easy to keep momentum till the end.”
Sophomore Keegan Dings tied her career-high with four goals and led the team with a career-high seven draw controls. Carvin finished with a hattrick, her third of the season. Freshman Olivia Glinski posted a pair of goals and three groundballs. Sophomore Shannon Wood scored one goal.
Defensively, sophomore Grace DeMarzio led the Raiders with five groundballs and three caused turnovers. Junior goalkeeper Kayla Vosburg posted 11 saves.
On Saturday, the Raiders faced No. 5-ranked East Stroudsburg at Whitenight Field.
The Raiders played well in the first quarter, coming back from a three-goal deficit to tie the Warriors before heading into the next frame. East Stroudsburg gained momentum to hold a 10-6 lead at halftime.
The second half was well-fought by the Raiders, but they were outscored 10-5. The final score of regulation was 20-11 for the Warriors.
Sara Vosburg finished with four goals, her third time in three straight contests. Senior Emily Fenwick finished with four goals, Dings with two, Wood with one and Pioli with one. Pioli also recorded a team-high of seven draw controls.
