From Friday at 6 p.m. to Saturday at 3 a.m., students walked around the clock for Shippensburg’s Relay for Life event.
Relay for Life is an all-night fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, with students forming teams and maintaining at least one member walking around the track of the ShipRec at all times. Over 400 students attended the event, with various teams from student organizations.
Throughout the night, Relay for Life used a minigame in which teams could pay to put a member of another team in “jail.” This member would then have to wait for a certain donation level to be reached before he or she could be released. The most jailed individual of the night was Matthew Hoover, who spent a collective of one hour and 55 minutes imprisoned.
The person with the most laps for the night was Meghan Gibbons, with a grand total of 119 laps.
The event featured several raffle baskets and prizes, including Legos, books, garden supplies, coffee and card games. Students were also invited to enjoy Dunkin’ Donuts at the midway of the event to recharge and reach the 3 a.m. finish line. A “Cutest Pet” competition was also held, with Collin Horan’s cat and AJ Sweigart’s dog taking home the gold.
The event raised a total of $3,182 dollars in the span of a single night. Combined with donations to the official website, Relay for Life at Shippensburg has raised $17,211. The group aims to raise a total of $20,000 by the end of the year. All donations will go to the American Cancer Society.
