Shippensburg University’s men’s track-and-field team cruised past its competition earlier this month at Seth Grove Stadium to win the PSAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship for the 15th straight year. Nine raiders won individual titles, with the team scoring 246.83 points, 98.5 points clear of runner-up Slippery Rock.
SU started the meet with a bang on Friday afternoon, with senior Josh Herbster setting a new PSAC record in the men’s hammer throw for the fourth time this season. His distance of 219 feet, 7 inches was a new best by 6 feet and is both a meet and school record.
The Raiders placed 1-2-3 in the 10K, moved to Friday night due to excessive heat. Sophomore Garrett Quinan took first at a time of 31:26.47. He led home junior Hayden Hunt by 1.52 seconds, with junior Aiden Gonder only another six tenths back.
Saturday saw another pair of event wins for the Raiders, including junior Mason Boyd taking the decathlon title with 6,522 points. Boyd only won one event, the long jump, but placed top-three in eight of the 10 events to secure the overall win. Senior Robert Lissner placed second, just 26 points off Boyd.
Junior Ian Sherlock took a convincing win in the 3K steeplechase to end Saturday’s action, winning by over 24 seconds. His time of 8:56.06 was a new personal record (PR) by over three seconds, and places him 17th nationally for NCAA Division II.
The Raiders saved their best for the final day, with athletes scoring in all 21 events, including five more event winners.
Sherlock came back on Sunday for his second event win of the meet, making up three positions on the final lap of the 1,500-meters to win at 3:52.94. Sherlock was named Outstanding Men’s Track Athlete for the meet.
The lone field win of the day for the men’s team belonged to junior Mo Whittle, taking the triple jump at 48 feet, 8.25 inches. He set a new PR by over a foot, and provisionally qualified for nationals.
The 800-meters saw a Shippensburg 1-2 finish, with senior Drew Dailey taking the title at 1:49.57. Sophomore Chase Hensinger came home at 1:50.26 for second place, with both provisionally qualifying for nationals.
Junior Robbie Hrabosky II took his first PSAC title, winning the 400-meter hurdles in 52.85 seconds. Freshman Travis Wilk also made the podium, taking third place.
Quinan provided the final event win for SU, coming home at 15:02.85 to take the 5K title. Quinan was named Most Valuable Men’s Athlete for the meet via his two event wins. Freshman Tommy Crum Jr. placed second, just two seconds behind.
The men’s team ended up scoring in every event of the meet, a well-balanced effort that was more than enough for the conference title. Next on the schedule are the NCAA National Championships at Emporia State University from May 22-24. The full list of SU athletes going had not been determined at the time of this story’s writing.
