Shippensburg University’s football team was in contention for most of Saturday’s away game against Bloomsburg but ultimately fell 20-10.
The Raiders could only muster 82 passing yards and went 0-for-3 on fourth down attempts in the defeat.
The teams traded punts on each of their first two drives before a 44-yard run by SU’s freshman QB Vincent Micucci moved the Raiders to the red zone. The offense stalled from there, as Bloomsburg was able to stop a fourth-and-2 attempt to regain possession.
Bloomsburg took advantage of the turnover on downs, scoring just three plays later via a 79-yard touchdown pass. This gave the Huskies a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter.
SU took advantage of a short field on its next drive and moved into field goal range. Freshman kicker Wilson Ingerski had a successful kick from 49 yards out that was negated by a false start penalty. Ingerski was unfazed and drilled a 54-yard field goal to put Shippensburg on the board.
Ingerski’s kick set the school record for the longest field goal in Raiders’ history and was only the second field goal of 50 yards or more in program history.
The teams combined to punt on the next four drives before Bloomsburg struck on another big play, this time a 93-yard touchdown pass. The Huskies missed the extra point but still had a 13-3 lead. SU entered positive but failed on fourth down on their next drive. The score remained 13-3 at the half.
Micucci scored a 4-yard touchdown in the third quarter, drawing SU within three. Micucci left the game with an injury on the next drive and did not return.
Sophomore Sam Stoner entered at QB and threw an interception on his first pass to end the drive.
SU got the ball back and relied on the running game, but a pair of incompletions inside positive territory forced another field goal attempt. Ingerski’s 38-yard try got caught in the wind and missed, allowing Bloomsburg to keep its three-point lead.
The Raiders had one last chance, getting the ball back with 2:06 remaining, but a fourth-and-12 deep in their own territory was unsuccessful. Bloomsburg then scored from four yards out to up their lead to 20-10, the game’s final score.
Shippensburg earned 260 yards on the day while allowing 326, with over half of Bloomsburg’s offensive yards coming on the two long touchdowns. The Raiders averaged over five yards per carry, but the passing game proved to be their downfall.
Micucci finished 11-for-24 with 82 yards passing and an interception, while Stoner went 0-for-9 with one interception . Micucci was the leading rusher with 90 yards on nine carries. Sophomore Karim Brice led the receivers with four catches.
Senior linebacker Javon Cruz had his second game of the season with double-digit tackles for the SU defense, totaling 10 on the day. Senior TJ Wagner had a pair of sacks, the only two on the day for Shippensburg.
Shippensburg returns home this week to celebrate senior day against East Stroudsburg. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at Seth Grove Stadium.
