Happy Halloween, SU students.
Halloween is my favorite time of the year. I have always loved it — the movies, music, appearance of the trees, pumpkin carving and smiles, but I especially love the costumes. Of course, I have to indulge in the 2024 trendy Halloween costume game.
Halloween costumes are the way into somebody’s mind. It shows their imagination. Without a costume, you wonder what they are thinking about or what their interests have been for the last year. For transparency, I will be dressing up as “Killer Queen” by Freddie Mercury this year. Try to guess where my mind has been.
I often think back to my younger self watching “Halloweentown.” I, personally, watch this movie year-round, but I know that it is supposed to be a seasonal, holiday-based movie. I remember looking at all of the characters residing in Halloweentown and the costumes that people in the mortal world would wear.
I was mostly intrigued by the special effects, clothing, makeup and effort the producers put into the creatures and characters of the movie. I think of our world as a big Halloweentown, as you never know what you will get from people.
Stylistically, this year, I am seeing more realistic costumes. By that, I mean that people are dressing up as other people, such as celebrities, which I find very interesting. Some of the biggest costumes I have seen lately are those of Sabrina Carpenter, Charli XCX and Chappell Roan. All of these individuals are incredibly iconic, so I fully understand the fascination.
For example, I have seen TikTok users create their own Sabrina Carpenter costume, just as Carpenter does for her concerts. These outfits consist of a monochromatic matching set — a corset top with a short skirt, rhinestone tights and platform boots — and a kiss-mark on their outer thigh. They match this outfit with satiny, wavy and blond hair, just as Carpenter has. The costume is magical.
Charli XCX costumes are largely inspired by her “Brat” album, which has a neon green and black theme. She has long, black hair and wears outfits that are very streetwear heavy. Her concerts are uplifting, fun and unpredictable, which I assume is why others would be drawn to dressing as her for Halloween.
Chappell Roan has been a femininomenon for quite some time now. Her unique style with several bright colors, big, red hair and campy makeup makes for a great costume. It is very recognizable, too, which I adore. A popular TikTok star Jake Shane dressed up as her in one of his most recent videos.
On the other hand, there are costumes for Halloween 2024 that are inanimate objects, which I found very eccentric. To dress as an inanimate object means you have quite the philosophical brain. My costume is anywhere between celebrity and inanimate, considering mine is based on a song.
Some of the inanimate costumes I have seen consist of dirty martinis, espresso martinis, disco balls, chef’s kiss and plenty of others.
Those who dress up as a dirty martini may choose to wear an olive-green bodysuit with a white skirt, tights and heels with a glass in their hand. Similarly, an espresso martini would wear the same outfit, but instead of green, they would wear a brown bodysuit.
Disco balls would dress in silver or gold sequence, or disco material, with go-go boots and sunglasses. A disco ball would be a very ’70s or ’80s look. It will make your head spin — in a good way, of course.
Chef’s kiss is one of my personal favorites, as this is a duo costume. One person would dress in a red or pink mini-dress with a kitchen utensil of some kind. The other person would wear an apron covered in kiss prints and a chef’s hat. I love this costume, as it is such an innocent take on Halloween.
Other costumes I have seen include The Golden Girls from the USA Gymnastics team, Minions and Inside Out characters. The Golden Girls include Simone Biles, Jordan Chiles, Suni Lee, Jade Carey and Hezly Rivera. The gymnasts wore remarkable leotards for their competitions this past summer, and they became costume-worthy to several groups of friends — lookalikes, the leotards are.
Dressing up for Halloween is such a great opportunity to spend time with your friends, significant others or family members. It could also be an excellent photo. Whatever you decide, Halloween is worth the effort.
Do not forget to put on your smile and dress for you. Halloween is not meant to impress, it is meant to express. Have a great Halloween and watch out for Michael Myers!
