Shippensburg University’s women's soccer team staged a thrilling comeback to defeat West Chester 2-1 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division clash on Tuesday night at David See Field.
With just 50 seconds remaining, sophomore Gabrielle Walker scored the game-winning goal off SU’s only corner kick of the night.
Shippensburg (3-6-2, 3-4-2 PSAC) entered the match aware of the challenge posed by West Chester's (7-4-0, 6-4-0 PSAC) strong forward line. The Raiders made tactical adjustments, shifting players into unfamiliar defensive roles to handle the Golden Rams' pressure. Five minutes into the game, a turnover allowed Faith Matter to fire a shot into the net, giving West Chester an early 1-0 lead.
Despite the early setback, Shippensburg did not let their heads drop. They faced a relentless 14 shots on goal from West Chester but managed to force many attempts from long range.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kirstin Brown delivered an outstanding performance with 13 saves, just short of her career-high 16 saves in a match against Kutztown earlier in the season.
Brown credited the team's defensive structure for the win: "We changed our shape up this game into a very defensive shape. We stayed resilient and composed because we played as a team; we played together and moved as a unit," Brown said to SU sports Info. "Our backline moved together, even though we played a lot of defense. We countered on the opportunities we did get, which is the reason we got the score we did today."
The Raiders found their breakthrough eight minutes into the second half. Junior Ryleigh Cook, capitalizing on a pass from Lannah Werynski, launched a stunning 25-yard shot into the top corner of the net to level the game at 1-1.
Cook spoke to SU Sports Info about the team's preparation leading up to the match: "We've been focusing on our defensive shape and little details. We knew we wouldn't have many chances, but we capitalized on the ones we did have, which was great."
West Chester continued to press hard, but the Shippensburg defense, led by Brown and anchored by defenders Mia Kemp and Chloe Chipego, stood firm. With just one minute remaining, Shippensburg earned its only corner of the match. Walker, who had remained vigilant throughout, headed the ball into the net after a scramble, securing her first goal of the season and delivering the win for the Raiders.
This marked Shippensburg's sixth win in 42 meetings with West Chester, breaking a six-game losing streak that dated back to 2021. The Raiders are now unbeaten in their last four home games (2-0-2) and head into Saturday's noon matchup at Kutztown with renewed momentum.
Saturday's match against Kutztown proved more challenging, as the Raiders fell 3-0 in a PSAC Eastern Division contest at Keystone Field. Shippensburg managed just three shots on goal, while Kutztown launched 16. Brown recorded 12 saves, but goals by Katelyn Economopoulos, Isabella Rossetti, and Gianna Rivera secured the win for the Golden Bears.
