The Luhrs Center of Performing Arts is showcasing Spring Ballroom Dance, a six-week course for beginner and advanced ballroom dance techniques led by Fred Hancock. The group gathers on the Luhrs stage for a simple breakdown of four dance styles: the Tango, Cha-Cha, Swing and the Foxtrot. Dancers of all ages are welcome, partner or no partner.
Hancock’s vivacious energy is shared throughout the whole group, as he breaks down each dance style for the unsure, and the more experienced dancers join in to aid those who might consider themselves “left-footed.” Many couples are repeat attendees and lifelong dancers. It is a skill to enjoy for many years and a tradition to cherish for many more.
As for repeat attendees, there is a very welcoming dance community in the Central Pennsylvania region. One member is a Shippensburg University student, Hannah Martin. When you do not see her working on campus at Freshens, you can find her on one of the many community ballroom dance floors.
“I got involved after growing up watching my grandparents swing dance, and they introduced me to Frank [Hancock],” Hannah said. “Swing is definitely my favorite style of dance, but all of the classes overall are just so full of joy.”
The classes will continue to be held every Monday until April 7, at 5:30 p.m. for the beginners, and 6:30 p.m. for the advanced dancers. To learn more about the Spring Ballroom Dance classes, visit the Luhrs Center website.
